Why buy your baby products from us Zebra Babies?

Why buy your baby products from us Zebra Babies?

Small Businesses matters!

Safe teething baby products – Small business is so important for the economy, when you buy from a small business you are helping not only a family but you are supporting a passionate dream. We make great quality and safe products, we are passionate about what we do. Our service is reliable and fast. Extensive range with great customer support only a message away.

I have learnt so much in the last 7 years from what mums want when shopping online, building websites, digital design, social media and marketing and how to be a product photographer just to name a few. Being able to bring safe, handmade products to the market is so important, from our dummy clips, teethers and pram toys. This was such a big thing for me. I committed, got insured, purchased the standard, sent them off to get tested. Absolute highlights are getting the emails with the testing reports saying passed, being one of the best feelings. Zebra Babies turns 7 this year in September. With the pending birthday I wanted to share a bit about myself and the brand and why us.

Learning about our product materials and what makes a good and not so good product. Silicone products are a great example. You would think silicone is all the same. It’s pretty simple, durable and looks similar across multiple brands. Our silicone tableware took over 18 months to get off the ground because we were never happy with the samples our factories were sending us. From flimsy silicone scoop bibs that didn’t hold their shape left alone catch food or bowls that didn’t have the structure we wanted. We got a silicone suction plate there once that I could actually roll. One of the most interesting sampling we did was for our silicone stackers. We worked with 2 factories, same external mould, colours, you would think side by side they are the same product. The silicone come out completely different and one was able to be squeezes and almost folded with no structure, this was a safety issue. We wanted to make sure we represented our brand and gave our customers the best silicone toys and tableware. Our silicone is high quality, direct manufactured and branded, that’s how much confidence we have in it.

Baltic Amber was something I personally used for myself and my middle bub. I thought the product was cute and if it did what i said, bonus. I was so surprised when I had such great results. Our customers message and leave reviews absolutely swearing by it. The range is extensive now and stocked in small businesses up and down the east coast from Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Sunshine coast and more.

Mums want an experience when shopping online, from the flow and ease of a website to a beautiful social link they can spy. Above all of that, we want it now. Our same day and next day turn around has our mums emailing regularly saying – “omg it’s here already” or – “I wasn’t expecting it so soon”. We love this! This is what online shopping is about. Beautifully packaged, wrapped and arrives quickly. YASS!

Find the best products for your newborns or teething babies at Zebra Babies. From Baltic Amber to teething toys. Dribble bibs and burp cloths for all that drool. We have silicone jewellery to keep baby distracted while feeding and dummy clips to keep those expensive bibs pacifiers or FRIGG dummies safe. Natural rubber products and food grade silicone. Nappy bag manufacturer. All products with Australian warranties.  We got you at meal time with our silicone tableware. From suction bowls and plates to silicone snack cup and baby cutlery.

Little bit about me, Ash.

I’m a FIFO wife, mum with 3 awesome kids, Hubby has been FIFO since our oldest was 1(almost 12 years) . It’s life and we make it work. Zebra Babies has allowed me to be there for our kids, with a more flexible work schedule. Before Zebra Babies is spent 3 years as a hairdresser, I absolutely loved it. I’m such a creative person at heart and love a great transformation. With a severe back injury ending in major spinal surgery I wasn’t going back. My back is thankfully great now. I really wanted to work, do my bit and have something to do that i felt the same about. Had an idea, I kinda slowly walked with it. I remember opening my first bead order. Sorting the silicone beads and making my first batch of silicone necklace designs thinking i really hope someone will buy them. From there expanding the product range and it being what it is today. I’m super proud of where and what the brand stands for today.

Bibs Dummies Cleaning, Care and Safety

Do always inspect the product carefully before each use. Especially when the baby has teeth. Pull the pacifier in all directions.
Discard it at the sign of damage or weakness. Only use dedicated pacifier holders tested to EN 12586. Never attach other ribbons or cords to a pacifier, your baby may be strangled by them. The pacifier is not allowed to be stored in direct sunlight.

We often get inquiries from parents who have doubts about how to clean the pacifiers. There are a lot of more or less qualified advice on how and how often you clean pacifier – so it is with good reason if you feel confused.
We will review how to properly clean the pacifiers, how often they need to be cleaned, and finally kill a couple of swaying myths about cleaning pacifiers.

When cleaning the pacifier, just follow these four simple steps:
1) Put the pacifiers in a clean bowl
2) Pour them with boiling water
3) Let the pacifiers soak for approx. 5 min.
4) Pick them up and let them dry

The vast majority of pacifiers are with valve. If the nipple has a valve, be sure to squeeze excess water out of the seat part when the nipple is sufficiently cooled.

TIP: When the child is over 3 months old, you can also rinse the pacifier by placing them in a sieve and pouring them with boiling water. This method is partly faster and partly avoids water collecting inside the seat part.

Caution! We often receive inquiries from parents who have followed the National Board of Health’s recommendation to cook the pacifier for 5 minutes before first use and daily afterwards. The result is broken pacifiers. DO NOT COOK. They are not meant to be boiled and are therefore destroyed by the high heat.
Instead, follow the instructions above, and you are sure to kill the bacteria without compromising the durability of the pacifier.

Part of a good sucking hygiene is frequent cleaning of the pacifiers. The younger the child, the more important it is to protect it from bacteria and to maintain good pacifier hygiene. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the child’s immune system has not yet managed to get acquainted with quite a number of different bacteria, and therefore also will not have learned to “defend” against them yet.
Premature infants and babies up to 3 months need more thorough and frequent cleaning than babies over 3 months of age. Therefore, the pacifier must be cleaned more often when the child is under 3 months.
0-3 months: The pacifier must be scaled every time it has been on the floor. In addition, the pacifier must be scalded at least once a day.
3+ months: Rinse the pacifier once a day and rinse it under the cold tap if it has been on the floor.

Benefits Of The Natural Rubber Soother Dummies

Finding the best dummy is difficult as they all seem very similar. Luckily the Natural Rubber Soother is an extremely unique dummy with many benefits. There are five main reasons Natural Rubber Soother is one of the best dummies in Australia:

  1. One of the safest on the market
  2. Extremely hygienic
  3. Helps encourage breastfeeding
  4. Sizes & shapes to match your baby’s development
  5. Environmentally friendly

Natural Rubber Soothers are made up of a single piece of natural rubber which means they don’t have joints (to avoid the teat separating that can lead to choking) so are extremely durable. Compared to its silicone counterpart that can rapidly tear once the surface has been damaged and can become a dangerous choking hazard, the Natural Rubber Soother is a safer option.

Unlike some dummies on the market the Natural Rubber Soother shield does not leave marks on baby’s faces due to the high level of elasticity of natural rubber. The size of the shield also prevents babies from squeezing the soother into their mouths.

Many parents are now are looking for toys and soothers that do not contain phthalates, which is typically used to soften toys for babies. While they make toys and soothers soft, they may not be so safe for our babies. The Natural Rubber Soother is:

  • Contains no chemical softeners
  • Parabens Free
  • Contains no PVC or Phthalates.

Our Natural Rubber Soothers also meet Australian Safety Standard for soothers (AS2432-1991/2008) FDA, European standards (EN1400) and GB 4806.2-94 standards.

Further to the safety benefits the single piece of rubber also makes the Natural Rubber Soothers extremely hygienic as there are no joins or cracks in the natural rubber soother where dirt and bacteria can accumulate.

They are also made from natural rubber having non-static properties meaning they do not attract dust and dirt.

There are a number of elements of the Natural Rubber Soother that help encourage breastfeeding.

  •  The shield – It is not cut out around the nose so the shield simulates a breast and touches the baby’s nose offering closer simulation to breastfeeding.
  • The material – The dummy is made out of rubber which is much softer and more flexible than silicone making it more similar to a nipple of a breast.
  • The shape of the teat – The round style dummies have been designed to encourage the same type of sucking that breastfeeding does. This shape tends to work better for breast-fed babies because the tongue is positioned under the nipple as it is during breast-feeding, which helps prevent nipple confusion. About 80% of babies tend to move soothers around in their mouths, so the position of the round soother can never end up around the wrong way. Because the tongue’s position never changes, midwives usually recommend starting babies on rounded soothers.

Natural rubber soothers come in two shapes, with an orthodontic (Ortho) which is a flatter teat, ideal for preventing dental issues or a round version sometimes called a cherry style, perfect for breastfed babies. Each shape comes in a number of different sizes designed to match the size of your baby’s mouth.

  • The round Natural Rubber Soother – As mentioned above the round style tends to work better for breast-fed babies because the tongue is positioned under the nipple as it is during breast-feeding, which helps prevent nipple confusion. The Natural Rubber Soothers round model is available in small (0-3 months), medium (3-6 months) and large (6 months+).
  • The ortho Natural Rubber Soother – Having a flatter teat helps to prevent future dental problems as this allows the baby to hold their jaw in the correct position when using the dummy. It is available in two sizes a small ideal for up to 6 months of age and a large for over 6 months.

The Natural Rubber Soother is produced with sustainable raw material, making it a green product. The dummies are made from pure, natural rubber from the Hevea Brasiliensi tree, grown in Malaysia. Other soothers on the market are made from silicone and plastic which are made from oil based materials and are a non-renewable resource.

Unlike plastic & silicon dummies,  Natural Rubber Soothers, teats and teethers are bio-degrade and the source and supply of rubber is also renewable through replanting of the rubber trees. On top of this we’re making efforts to reduce our carbon foot print by sourcing the rubber from Malaysia, the closest sustainable rubber plantation to Australian. Making ours the lowest footprint in the world for this type of product.

Nappy bag, what to pack?

Nappy Bag Essentials

Nappy bags are an essential part of leaving the house with baby. A well packed nappy bag can save the day, but what do you pack apart from nappies? How many of each item do you pack? With backpack nappy bags you can almost take the entire house with you.

Start with Nappieswipes and bum rash cream. Quantity all depends on age of baby & how long you are leaving the house. I always liked to have a min of 6 nappies in my bag at all times. We also used MCN ( modern cloth nappies and would take at least 2 with an extra wet bag, because poop explosions. You can also buy disposable bags to pop your dirty nappies in also. Take the entire wipe packet, wipes are a parents best friend. Don’t forget your change mat, and hand sanitiser . Our nappy bags do include a change mat, Bonus!

Clothes & swaddles for baby, 2 changes of clothes for baby. A cute onesie and something warmer like a cardigan or long onesie and long pants is a great idea, pack to the season and where you live. A hat and baby safe sunscreen, keep them safe from the sun. Pack some swaddles, these come in handy not just for wrapping baby but to pop over your pram when baby is sleeping, over your shoulder while breast feeding or a safe surface to change baby on. It’s always a great idea to have a spare shirt in the car or nappy bag for both mum and dad.

Burp Cloths or bibs are an essential. Don’t ruin your good swaddles with milk spit, instead of walking around with an old hand towel grab some of our gorgeous bib burp cloths. these guys are a 2 in 1 burp cloth bib.

Bottles and formula or expressed breastmilk. If you use formula, it’s best not to prepare it before you go. Instead, pack a formula dispenser. Pre measure into each section of the dispenser. There is some amazing formula dispensers out there, we always avoided taking the entire tin unless we couldn’t pack enough in our dispenser. Clean bottles with the required amount of warm water. Expressed breastmilk can be kept at room temperature (no warmer than 26 degrees) for around six hours. Most nappy bags have insulated bottle holders.

Nursing cover, Booby cream and some spare breast pads if you are breastfeeding, nothing worst then leaking through your breast pads. Anything you feel. That will make you feel more comfortable feeding baby while out and about.

For older babies

bibs, spoon, water tight food container with food or a food pouch and finger food depending on baby’s age. Sippy cup with water.

Dummies or any other comfort items if your baby has one. Don’t forget that dummy clip or dummy chain

Toys, teethers or pram toys – Keep them entertained while out and about with some toys. Choose toys based on your outing and your baby’s age. A toddler going to a restaurant often requires a lot of entertaining distractions, while a four-month-old may be happy with one teether.

Mum and dads things, don’t forget about yourself. I never really carried a separate handbag, I always popped my phone, wallet, keys ect into bubs baby bag, don’t forget your pads or tampons. We also always kept our hospital personal health record book (red book) in our bag too. Hot tip, keep it in a sealed pouch safe from spills.

First aid kits are super handy and most of the time left out of a nappy bag. In a waterproof container or bag, pack band aids, antibiotic cream, pain reliever (for you and your child).

Its always a great idea to check everything before leaving the house and keep it organised for smooth baby outings.

Lets Talk Safety

Lets talk safety for silicone teething toys, dummy chains and silicone necklaces

It’s a businesses responsibility to ensure the products being sold are not only safe but if the product is captured under a mandatory safety standard they must comply. It’s also a must for business to be fully registered and insured.

We are taking all the steps to ensure the safety of our customers with independent laboratory testing, owning all relevant safety standards, correct business insurance, and doing all the research on my manufacturers and suppliers. This process is not only very expensive but time consuming, you can not put a price on safety!

What should you look for when buying teething items, toys for under 36 months & dummy chains?

Is the business a registered Australian business? Is this business insured? Insurance companies require businesses to have testing and own copies of the standards that are relevant to our business. A quick ABN search of the business will tell you if it’s registered.

CHEAP vs SAFETY of your baby – generally if it’s cheap, on eBay or Etsy, it’s most likely not up to the standards.

Safety standards & independent testing – when a business states an item is compliant or meets the safety standards it doesn’t always mean that it was been independently tested, most of the time it means that it has been tested in house via the test methods stated in the standards this is great, but its still not a laboratory tested. This is concerning when these products are usually made by hand and are strung with beads and knots.

Look for the standards – make sure they are correct.

Message and ask the business – if you are unsure ( someone will beat around the bush and dodge answering question) some may claim they are ok because the business they purchased the raw materials from say the comply to the standards.

The items we stock and sell, safety standards are : DIN EN 12586 for Soother holders. Safety of toys AU/NZ 8124 for teething toys and pretty much anything else that comes under a toy for ages 0-36m

Our dummy clips, and ring teethers have been all lab tested.

Silicone Necklaces do not have a standard as they are not a toy nor a teething item. Silicone necklaces shouldn’t be referred to as silicone teething necklaces as this may imply that they are a toy. Intended for mums to wear while breastfeeding, holding baby ect. Our junior range of necklaces is for ages 3+.

This is ruled by the ACCC and Product safety Australia.

If you have experienced an unsafe product, you can report to product safety Australia. All current recalls are also listed on their website.

Baltic Amber, How it works, What Should i Know?

Here is the theory: Amber is tree resin that has fossilised and become hard. Mined into beads and made into jewellery. One of the chemicals in Baltic amber is succinic acid. Some people believe that succinic acid has pain-relieving or healing qualities when absorbed into the skin.

I get asked from time to time how I test the amber necklaces and amber bracelets to make sure it’s genuine. We have an amazing supplier direct from Lithuania but in saying this we like to test my amber anyway. There is actually a few ways. From a hot needle test to a float test and many more. My favourite, ultraviolet light.
As you can see in the pictures below I have a honey raw bracelet. Stock image, a picture taken in normal light and then 2 in UV.
The amber glows while the plastic clasp remains dark. True amber will fluoresce under a black light. From the experience, what colour and how much it glows depends on the type of amber and quality. Some pieces will glow brighter than others and in different shades of yellow-green to blue.

How cool is that!!

This article is written from a personal prospective. Always seek professional medical advice.

As per the TGA there are no claims made by Zebra Babies or our direct supplier in the regards to the benefits or dis benefits of Amber products. We recommend researching all avenues to understand Amber. Seek medical advice first if needed.

BALTIC AMBER should always be used under adult supervision, removed at nap/bed times and for bath time also.
