Are amber beads safe for babies?

Mums and Dads have always been eager to find ways to relieve teething discomfort for their babies. So, when it could be as simple as amber beads around the child’s neck, it’s understandable that mums and dads would become interested.

What’s an amber bead necklace?

An amber bead teething necklace is a string of round amber chips the child wears around their neck. The amber forms from fossilised tree resin which is shaped into rounded, small beads threaded onto a piece of string or cord. Claiming the resin, once warmed by the child’s skin, has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to soothe a child’s swollen, sore gums.

Amber bead anklets and bracelets are also available, although necklaces are the most popular. The beads come in a range of colours, from white to yellow and brown to black.

Who are the necklaces made for?

Amber bead necklaces are made for children and adults, who are teething or showing signs of inflammatory conditions. The recommended age varies, although they generally say benefits in wearing them between 4 months.

What Is Baltic Amber?

Baltic amber is the fossilized tree resin of ancient conifer trees that grew in the Baltic region 40-60 million years ago. Baltic amber is the only type of amber that has a rich concentration of succinic acid (3-8 %). Baltic amber is then mined into beads and made into jewellery. Succinic Acid (also called Amber Acid)  in Baltic amber is believed to have pain-relieving or healing qualities when absorbed into the skin.

Are amber bead necklaces safe?

Product safety is so important when it comes to babies. Amber bead necklaces and bracelets are only to used with strict adult supervision. All safety and care instructions should be read followed. They can be a strangulation risk to children and they can also break and the child could inhale the beads if they mouth or chew the necklace.

Necklaces should sit on babies collarbone and not be too long as they may chew the necklace. Always to wear under clothing against the skin. Amber bracelet should be worn on the ankle or wrist and not roll off.

baby and identified the risk of choking to babies who wear a string of amber beads.

During the teething period, it takes around 4 days for the tooth to emerge through the gum and around 3 days afterwards. There is no consistent pattern of behaviour when it comes to teething. Some children don’t seem at all bothered; others become quite irritable.

10 other soothing methods to help with a teething baby

  1. Lots of cuddles
  2. Extra naps if their night sleep is being disrupted
  3. Extra breast or bottle feeds if they’re keen
  4. Teething toy and toys to chew on
  5. A cool, wet washer
  6. Foods that can help sooth like steamed cold apples.
  7. Offering something firm to suck on, such as a rusk
  8. Massaging your baby’s gums with a clean finger
  9. Drying the skin around your child’s mouth and chin if they’re drooling a lot – rashes are common in areas that stay moist
  10. Pain relief medication if your baby is miserable – make sure you use the right dose for your baby’s age and weight and speak with a doctor or pharmacist first

Amber necklace Safety

  • Always supervise your child when they are wearing amber bead necklaces, bracelets or anklets.
  • Remove any amber beads before you leave your child alone (even if it’s only for a short period) and when they go to sleep.
  • Never let your child chew on the amber beads.

Who can I speak to for more information?

Speak to your doctor or child health nurse if you have any concerns about your child’s teething. They can give you great support and advice.

We do not make any therapeutic claims that amber is a miracle cure for teething babies and all safety and care should be followed.

homemade sensory paint

Homemade paint – We loved making homemade paints at home out of cornflour and food colouring – Super simple!

A great alternative to cornflour and food colouring is blending a variety of fruits ( strawberries, blueberries, kiwi ect) for colour and letting baby paint away, keep a washcloth or hose close this will be sticky.

WE FOUND THIS GREAT RECIPE HERE

ALL YOU NEED –

4 Tablespoons of corn flour (corn starch)

Cold water

1 Cup of boiling water

Liquid food colouring

METHOD

In a medium saucepan, mix the cornflour with enough cold water to make a paste. (Not too runny).

Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and stir thoroughly so there are no lumps.

Turn on medium heat on the stove and mix. The mixture will start to change and you will notice some clear streaks forming in the mixture. Once you see this, turn off the heat and continue stirring. It will start to thicken and turn into a wonderful, custard-like consistency.

Spoon equal amounts into empty jars, cups or containers and add food colouring. Mixing until completely combined. For each colour, we added 3 drops of yellow, green, red and blue. To make orange, we added 1 drop of red and 2 yellow and to make purple, we added 1 drop of blue and 2 red.

Store in the fridge covered with cling wrap for up to 2 weeks. This paint recipe does not have any preservative in it, so it is important to check that the paint has not expired before giving it to children.

Tip: If the mixture has harden from being in the fridge, adding a little bit of boiling hot water or leave the paint our for a few hours will return to its smooth consistency.

You can make more colored rice if desired just adjust the measurements. Or you can do several colors in different containers and mix them together for a rainbow theme!

STEP 2: Next add 1 Teaspoon of Vinegar.

You could also try lemon juice instead of vinegar for a fun lemon scented rice sensory bin.

STEP 3: Now add as much food coloring as desired (deeper color= more food coloring).

You can make several shades of the same color for a fun effect.

STEP 4: Cover the container and SHAKE the rice vigorously for a minute or two. Check to see if the rice is evenly coated with the food coloring!

STEP 5: Spread the colored rice on a paper towel or a tray to dry in an even layer.

STEP 6: Once dry you can transfer the colored rice to a bin for sensory play.

What will you add? Mushie Stacking cups, Sea creatures, dinosaurs, unicorns, mini-figures all make great additions to any sensory play activity.

How to clean your FRIGG Dummies

How to clean your FRIGG Dummies

How to clean your FRIGG Dummy

Our FRIGG dummies need a proper amount of care in order to protect our little ones from bacteria and viruses and maintain a good pacifier hygiene.

DIRECT SOURCE FROM FRIGG WEBSITE- https://www.frigg.com/how-to-clean-your-frigg-pacifier

Natural Rubber Dummy cleaning – step by step:

1.       Put the pacifier in a clean bowl

2.       Pour with boiling water

3.       Let the pacifier soak for approximately 5 minutes

4.       Pick up the pacifier and let it dry

5.       Squeeze excess water out of the pacifier when it has cooled down sufficiently

Caution! Do not boil the pacifier in a pot. Our pacifiers are not meant to be boiled; they will therefore be ruined by the high heat.

Pacifier cleaning – how often?

The younger your child is, the more important it is to protect it from bacteria and viruses and maintain a good pacifier hygiene. This is partly due to the fact that a young child’s immune system doesn’t mature until they are three months old.  Premature babies, infants, and babies up to 3 months do not tolerate as many bacteria and viruses as babies over three months. Therefore, the pacifier must be cleaned more often when your child is between 0-3 months old.

Premature babies, infants, and babies up to 3 months old:
The pacifier should be cleaned with hot water every time it has been dropped on the floor. In addition, the pacifier should be cleaned with boiling water at least once a day.

Babies older than 3 months:
Rinse the pacifier once a day under hot water and rinse it under cold water if it has been dropped on the floor.

NB! No matter how much you clean and care for your dummies it is important to replace.

The benefits of offering your child FRIGG Dummies

This Article on Frigg dummies is sourced from the FRIGG Website – https://www.frigg.com/the-benefits-of-offering-your-child-a-frigg-pacifier

The benefits of offering your child FRIGG Dummies

A pacifier comforts and gives your child a peace of mind. It strengthens your child’s mouth and jaw muscles, while training the coordination of the jaw, palate, tongue, and lips. It is also beneficial for your child’s breathing, eating and speech development. Frigg dummies come in 2 sizes – 0-6m Frigg Dummies Size 2 6-18 months

There are many reasons to give your child a pacifier, but when is the appropriate time to do it?

Support breastfeeding with a round pacifier

The general recommendation is to introduce newborns to pacifiers when breastfeeding is fully in place. However, more and more professionals are moving away from this opinion and now recommend offering children a pacifier from the start – as long is it is the right pacifier. The right one is a pacifier with a round nipple in natural rubber (latex).

The round pacifier is the type of pacifier that most closely resembles a mother’s breast in both shape and material. The explanation for this is that when your child is about to breastfeed, the tongue rolls up around the nipple and creates a vacuum, which causes the milk to flow. When your child sucks on a round pacifier, it rolls its tongue around it the same way.

Avoid nipple confusion with a round pacifier

Nipple confusion typically occurs if newborns become accustomed to using a flat (anatomical or symmetrical) pacifier, before gaining 100% control of its sucking technique during breastfeeding. Flat pacifiers do not require your child to roll the tongue around the pacifier. On the contrary, it is more likely for your child to put pressure on the pacifier with a flat tongue and the lips squeezed. If your child transfers this technique to breastfeeding, the milk will flow poorly, your child will have more difficulty getting enough food, and breastfeeding will be painful for you as a mother.

If you wait to offer your child a pacifier until after breastfeeding is completely in place, you will of course avoid nipple confusion. However, if you want your child to benefit from a pacifier many positive qualities, you can safely introduce your child to a pacifier with a round natural rubber nipple from an early stage.

Why buy your baby products from us Zebra Babies?

Why buy your teething baby products from us, Zebra Babies?

Small Businesses matters!

Safe teething baby products – Small business is so important for the economy, when you buy from a small business you are helping not only a family but you are supporting a passionate dream. We make great quality and safe products, we are passionate about what we do. Our service is reliable and fast. Extensive range with great customer support only a phone call or message away.

I have learnt so much in the last 7 years from what mums want when shopping online, building websites, SEO, digital graphic design, social media and marketing and how to be a product photographer just to name a few. Being able to bring safe, handmade products to the market is so important, from our dummy clips, teethers and pram toys. This was such a big thing for me. I committed, got insured, purchased the standard, sent them off to get tested.

Absolute highlights are getting the emails with the testing reports saying passed, being one of the best feelings. It’s such a hard trot from design to safety certified. Zebra Babies turns 7 this year in September. With the pending birthday I wanted to share a bit about myself and the brand and why us.

Quality Products!

Learning about our product materials and what makes a good and not so good product when manufacturing is so important. Silicone products are a great example. You would think silicone is all the same. It’s simple, durable and looks similar across multiple brands. Our silicone bibs and tableware took over 18 months from first sample to get off the ground because we were never 100% happy with the samples our factories were sending us. From flimsy silicone scoop bibs that didn’t hold their shape left alone catch food or bowls that didn’t have the structure we wanted.

One of the most interesting sampling we did was for our silicone stackers. We worked with 2 factories, same external mould, colours, you would think side by side they are the same product. The silicone come out completely different and one was able to be squeezes and almost folded with no structure, this was a safety issue. We wanted to make sure our brand gave our customers the best silicone toys and tableware out there. Our silicone is high quality, direct manufactured and branded, that’s how much confidence we have in it.

Passion for my brand and ethical stance.

Baltic Amber was something I personally used for myself and my middle child as well as youngest babe. I thought the product was interesting and if it did what i said, bonus. I was so surprised when I had such great results. I personally wear amber in my daily life for RSI. Our customers message and leave reviews absolutely swearing by it, warms my heart. The range is extensive and stocked in small businesses up and down the east coast from Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Sunshine coast to South Australia.

Customer Service!

Mums want an experience when shopping online, from the flow and ease of a website to a beautiful social link they can spy. Above all of that, we want it now. Our next day turn around has our mums emailing regularly saying – “omg it’s here already” or – “I wasn’t expecting it so soon”. We love this! This is what online shopping is about. Beautifully packaged, wrapped and arrives quickly. YASS!

Extensive Range

Find the best products for your newborns or teething babies at Zebra Babies. From Baltic Amber to teething toys. Dribble bibs and burp cloths for all that drool. We have silicone jewellery to keep baby distracted while feeding and dummy clips to keep those expensive bibs pacifiers or FRIGG dummies safe. Natural rubber products and food grade silicone. Nappy bag manufacturer. All products with Australian warranties.  We got you at meal time with our silicone tableware. From suction bowls and plates to silicone snack cup and baby cutlery.

Little bit about me, Ash.

I’m a FIFO wife, mum with 3 awesome babes, Hubby has been FIFO since our oldest was 1(almost 12 years) . It’s life and we make it work. Zebra Babies has allowed me to be there for our kids, with a more flexible work schedule. Before Zebra Babies is spent 3 years as a hairdresser, I absolutely loved it.

I’m such a creative person at heart and love a great transformation. With a severe back injury ending in major spinal surgery I wasn’t going back. My back is thankfully great now. I really wanted to work, do my bit and have something to do that I felt the same about. Had an idea, I kinda slowly walked with it. I remember my first order, opening that first silicone bead order. Sorting the silicone beads and making my first batch of silicone necklace designs thinking I really hope someone will buy them. From there expanding the product range and it being what it is today. I’m so proud of where and what the brand stands for today.

Bibs Dummies Cleaning, Care and Safety

FOR YOUR BABY’s SAFETY

Do always inspect the product carefully before each use. Especially when the baby has teeth. Pull the pacifier in all directions.
Discard it at the sign of damage or weakness. Only use dedicated pacifier holders tested to EN 12586. Never attach other ribbons or cords to a pacifier, your baby may be strangled by them. The pacifier is not allowed to be stored in direct sunlight.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR PACIFIERS?

We often get inquiries from parents who have doubts about how to clean the pacifiers. There are a lot of more or less qualified advice on how and how often you clean pacifier – so it is with good reason if you feel confused.
We will review how to properly clean the pacifiers, how often they need to be cleaned, and finally kill a couple of swaying myths about cleaning pacifiers.

HOW TO STERILISE THE PACIFIERS

When cleaning the pacifier, just follow these four simple steps:
1) Put the pacifiers in a clean bowl
2) Pour them with boiling water
3) Let the pacifiers soak for approx. 5 min.
4) Pick them up and let them dry

BIBS STEP1BIBS STEP2BIBS STEP3

The vast majority of pacifiers are with valve. If the nipple has a valve, be sure to squeeze excess water out of the seat part when the nipple is sufficiently cooled.

TIP: When the child is over 3 months old, you can also rinse the pacifier by placing them in a sieve and pouring them with boiling water. This method is partly faster and partly avoids water collecting inside the seat part.

Caution! We often receive inquiries from parents who have followed the National Board of Health’s recommendation to cook the pacifier for 5 minutes before first use and daily afterwards. The result is broken pacifiers. DO NOT COOK. They are not meant to be boiled and are therefore destroyed by the high heat.
Instead, follow the instructions above, and you are sure to kill the bacteria without compromising the durability of the pacifier.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN THEM?

Part of a good sucking hygiene is frequent cleaning of the pacifiers. The younger the child, the more important it is to protect it from bacteria and to maintain good pacifier hygiene. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the child’s immune system has not yet managed to get acquainted with quite a number of different bacteria, and therefore also will not have learned to “defend” against them yet.
Premature infants and babies up to 3 months need more thorough and frequent cleaning than babies over 3 months of age. Therefore, the pacifier must be cleaned more often when the child is under 3 months.
0-3 months: The pacifier must be scaled every time it has been on the floor. In addition, the pacifier must be scalded at least once a day.
3+ months: Rinse the pacifier once a day and rinse it under the cold tap if it has been on the floor.
